A Slower Kind of Coastal Getaway: December in Depoe Bay
December 12, 2025Why Winter Is Prime Beachcombing Season
Winter storms and changing tides naturally reshape the shoreline, revealing shells, driftwood, agates, and other coastal treasures. January beach walks often feel more intentional — bundled up, eyes on the sand, and unhurried by summer foot traffic.
The quieter winter season allows beachcombers to take their time, whether they’re scanning the tide line for color and texture or simply enjoying the rhythm of the ocean.
The Lincoln City Glass Float Tradition
One of the most anticipated winter traditions on the Oregon Coast is Lincoln City’s glass float drop. Each year, handcrafted glass floats are placed along the city’s seven-mile stretch of beach, from Roads End to Siletz Bay.
For 2026, Lincoln City’s Opening Weekend will take place January 9–11, with 100 glass floats hidden above the high tide line over three days. These colorful orbs are created by local artists and celebrate the area’s maritime heritage and creative spirit.
Details, schedules, and viewing tips are shared through the city’s official program, Finders Keepers, which continues float drops throughout the year.
Exploring at Your Own Pace
While the glass floats are a fun addition to a winter beach walk, the experience is about much more than the hunt. January invites visitors to slow down, enjoy the walk itself, and appreciate the details that often go unnoticed during busier months.
From Depoe Bay, it’s an easy drive to Lincoln City, making Sea & Sand RV Park a comfortable home base for day trips, scenic drives, and relaxed coastal exploration.
A Thoughtful Way to Experience the Coast
Winter beachcombing is as much about atmosphere as it is about discovery. Crisp air, shifting light, and long stretches of shoreline create space to unplug and reconnect with nature.
After a day outdoors, returning to Sea & Sand RV Park offers a chance to warm up, unwind, and listen to the ocean settle into the evening.
Plan a January Coastal Getaway
January proves that the Oregon Coast is a year-round destination. Whether you’re drawn by the glass float tradition or simply looking for a slower way to explore the shoreline, winter beachcombing offers a memorable and rewarding experience.
