It’s that magical time of year again! March marks the peak of gray whale migration, and guess what? At Sea & Sand RV Park, you’ve got one of the best front-row seats on the entire Oregon Coast.
Thousands of whales are on the move right now — cruising their way north from Baja California toward Alaska — and they pass right by our stretch of coast. All you have to do is step outside your RV and look toward the horizon!
What to Know About the Migration
- Gray whales travel up to 10,000 miles round trip
- Most of them hug the coast — just a few hundred yards offshore
- You can spot them from the beach, your RV window, or a cozy chair at your RV site
- Peak northbound migration = March through May, with the most sightings often in late March
Why Depoe Bay is So Special
They don’t call it the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast for nothing!
The rugged shoreline and deep offshore drop-offs make Depoe Bay a natural whale highway, and Sea & Sand RV Park sits right along the route. Bonus? We’re also just minutes from the Oregon State Whale Watching Center, if you want to dive deeper into the science of it all.
Whale Watching Tips
Want to increase your odds of a great sighting? Here’s what helps:
- Bring binoculars (but whales are often visible with the naked eye!)
- Scan for spouts (a misty puff of air above the waves)
- Look for flukes and tails after a spout — that’s the good stuff
- Be patient, breathe in the salty air, and enjoy the view
Some guests swear by watching just after sunrise. Others enjoy sunset sightings with a side of s’mores. Either way, you’re in for something amazing.
What to Bring
- Cozy layers (March can still be breezy)
- A camera or phone with zoom
- Thermos of coffee, tea, or cocoa
- A comfy camp chair — you might be here a while
Bonus: Spring is Sprouting!
While the whales are migrating, early wildflowers and coastal greenery are starting to peek through. March is a beautiful time to hike, explore tidepools, and see the coast begin to wake up for spring.
